In questo tardo autunno italiano, i Cool Ghouls portano l’eco di interminabili notti d’estate californiana. Motivi freschi e gioiosi, urla festaiole, sonorità solari, fanno di Swirling Fire la colonna sonora ideale delle notti più spensierate, e questo soprattutto perché i quattro giovani hanno un vero talento per le buone melodie, tutte accattivanti e di un’immediatezza straordinaria, e per la struttura dei pezzi, in cui con tempismo sempre azzeccato vanno ad inserire dettagli e divagazioni mai forzati (esemplare in questo senso Insight, con la sua inaspettata coda da “fine party”). Questa specie di eterno presente festaiolo, però, assume musicalmente un vestito a dir poco vintage: l’amore dei Cool Ghouls per il garage rock e la psichedelia, il sound che ha contraddistinto la Bay Area in tutto il mondo, si riversa con tutta la naturalezza possibile in questo disco; fin dalle primissime note di And It Grows – e le sue belle armonie vocali a tre – ci sembra di sentire i Beach Boys, mentre subito dopo, al suono di chitarre in vibrato, riff acidi e ancora ottime armonizzazioni, passiamo mentalmente in rassegna i nostri ascolti dei Creedence, dei Jefferson Airplane, di CSN, dei Byrds e così via. Così diviso tra presente e passato, il disco è certo godibilissimo: il passo successivo, ora, è quello di emergere con una personalità più definita, per non perdersi nel culto della gloriosa stagione musicale di San Francisco e dei suoi eroi elettrici. ENGLISH: In this late Italian fall, Cool Ghouls are bringing the echo of endless Californian summer nights. Fresh and joyful tunes, party shouts, cheerful sounds, make Swirling Fire the ideal soundtrack for your most carefree nights, mostly because these 4 guys have a true talent for good melodies (catchy and extremely immediate) and for the structure of their tracks, where they always guess the right time to put new details and digressions (see Insight in this regard, with its unexpected “end of party” closing). This sort of party eternal present, however, employs a musical dress which is vintage to say the least: Cool Ghouls love for garage rock and psychedelic music, the sound that marked the Bay Area all over the world, pours in this album in the most natural way; from the earliest notes of And It Grows – and its beautiful three-part vocal harmonies – we seem to hear the Beach Boys, and immediately after, while we hear vibrato guitars, acid riffs and again excellent harmonies, we reconsider in our mind our past listening to Creedence, Jefferson Airplane, CSN, Byrds and so on. So divided between present and past, the album is surely amusing: the next step, now, is to emerge with a more defined personality, not to get lost in worshipping the glorious musical season of San Francisco and its electric heroes.
